Tragic loss of cafeteria staff member

A couple of weeks ago, Amherst High School lost a new but beloved member of its community, cafeteria staffer Brittany Wheeler.

Ms. Wheeler only started on January 4, 2016, but made some strong connections between her co-workers right away.

“It’s not easy to find someone who can come in at 5:30 in the morning, so we were very happy when she accepted the position,” said Rebecca Trietley, the Whitson’s food service director for the district.

Ms. Trietley also recalls Ms. Wheeler as an enthusiastic woman who was always trying to learn and take on more duties.

“I was impressed that at her young age and with three children, she was always working so hard to establish herself,” Ms. Trietley said.

Ms. Wheeler and her husband, Anthony Darling, both 24 years old, died in a devastating crash with a tractor trailer on route 63 in Montague.  The crash is still under investigation.

The parents are survived by their three children that did not understand why their parents wouldn’t be coming home again, said Ms. Wheeler’s sister, in a Mass Live video published in March.

The children have been staying with their uncle in Millers Falls, but the family said they don’t know what their future holds.

“Her husband faithfully drove her in every morning and they seemed like a good team.  She won our hearts during her time with us.  She was a very sweet, kind, hardworking young woman,” Ms. Trietley recalls.
