Fifa corruption heartbreaking
I was the mere age of four when I first had a soccer ball at my feet. It is a game that I, along with millions of people all around the world, have fallen deeply in love with.
This is why it kills me to know that beyond the pitch, there is an organization that taints the name of soccer.
Even more worrying, this group is portrayed as the foundation of our sport. The Fédération Internationale de Football, otherwise known as Fifa, unfortunately, has been a corrupt organization for decades.
Members of Fifa have been accused of taking bribes and kickbacks. The most recent scandals have involved the awarding of the upcoming World Cups to locations in Russia and Qatar.
The high-ranking officials at Fifa reportedly accepted millions of dollars for confirmation of their support during the World Cup location voting. We can’t let a few megalomaniacs at Fifa ruin the image of our game.
Corruption runs rampant throughout the ranks of Fifa. Sepp Blatter, the former president of Fifa for 17 years, has often been linked with unethical payments and deals. The governing body of soccer has been run by a tyrant.
The list of offenders goes on and on. The United States has charged some 40 individuals with connections to corruption in Fifa.
It is a shame that such a beautiful game has become a victim to the plague of corruption.
Who can we trust? Who will lead Fifa and restore the reputation of the game of soccer?
I believe we need to take the corporate executives and politicians out of Fifa. Replace these criminals with former players who truly care and love soccer.
Those who still obtain the passion that every young kid has playing in the streets until the sun’s light finally dims. These few individuals are the only people that I believe should govern the world’s favorite game.
